Soundtract is a compact audio application initially developed to streamline the transcription of field recordings. During its development, it became evident that the tool could serve a broader audience, including musicians learning to play by ear. Despite its straightforward interface and modest size, Soundtract offers a robust set of features that deliver significant functionality.

One of the application's standout capabilities, and the origin of its name, is its advanced real-time noise reduction feature. Utilizing spectral subtraction techniques, Soundtract effectively removes unwanted noise from audio recordings, providing a cleaner listening experience. This noise reduction can be applied automatically or selectively within the waveform, giving users precise control.

In addition to cleaning audio files, Soundtract allows users to import videos, extract and enhance the audio, and then re-integrate the processed sound back into the original video, all in real time. This seamless workflow distinguishes it from many comparable tools.

Additional features include the ability to zoom into specific segments of audio for focused playback, reduce playback speed by up to 30%, and export files in formats such as M4A and MOV. Noteworthy functionalities comprise DRM-free import of iTunes audio, channel extraction from videos, gesture-based navigation for panning and zooming, and looping of isolated sections.

Further capabilities involve persistent playlist positioning upon relaunch, comprehensive export options preserving effects—like tempo adjustments and noise reduction—and the capacity to output processed audio directly back into videos stored in the device’s photo library.
